John Peel first played ‘Atmosphere’ on his radio show in March 1980. By the time the song was released as a flipside to ‘She’s Lost Control’ a few months later, Ian Curtis had already committed suicide, aged 23. Not only is the song a timeless memorial, but also Martin Hannett’s production is extraordinarily brilliant.
