Like Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand, I’ve featured Chaz Bear quite a bit since I started this blog 7+ years ago. And this is no time to stop; for Toro Y Moi keeps getting better. ‘Fading’ is the opening track of his most recent album Outer Peace.
Chaz Bear is coolio. Last month, the artist professionally known as Toro y Moi released a new album Outer Peace. ‘Ordinary Pleasure’ is one of a number of funky tracks on an album that makes me want to hang with him and his friends. The sound of my kind of house party.
19-year-old Alex O’Connor is also known by his stage name Rex Orange County. The singer-songwriter was born in Haslemere, a-far-from-gritty corner of Surrey. From there, he took the influences and Thundercat, Toro Y Moi and Frank Ocean and divined his path. This white man has found his jazzy R&B chi; Surrey’s answer to Jon Bellion.
‘Still Sound’ is off Toro Y Moi’s second album Underneath The Pine. From South Carolina, Chazwick Bundick and his Toro Y Moi sound is suitably lazy, sun-soaked and cool. You will notice an air of the French invasion (Daft Punk, Air, Mr Oizo and Etienne de Crecy) and Money Mark’s keyboard of the late 1990s – that mix of dreamy electronic funk, jazz, and hip hop that was so refreshing, and, let’s face it, still is. Have a great weekend.
