Kings Of Leon – Wicker Chair (2003)

When the Kings Of Leon debut album, Youth and Young Manhood, hit the shelves in 2003, it was a sensation with the UK music press. Their potential had been heralded earlier in the year by their first pressing, an EP entitled Holy Roller Novocaine. The record contained ‘Wicker Chair’ – a gem of track, with its simple country melody and hook. Until its close, it belies the raucous blues/punk that would take them to the top over the next 5 years.

In a year that they are showing signs of a return to form, one wonders what might represent their zenith. Kings Of Leon released Because Of The Times in 2007 and the album featured the direct ‘McFearless’. Will Caleb Followill get a better set of vocals for his rock persona? “So I know I’ma show/It’s my show/I must go/With my soul.”

Kings Of Leon RML

Guess what, I gotta fever and the only prescription is more cowbell. I bought the Kings Of Leon’s debut extended play Holy Roller Novocaine on the recommendation of the boogie-rock-loving folk at Rolling Stone magazine. The brilliant sound of ‘Wasted Time’ and ‘California Waiting’ would be further explored later in 2003 on their debut full-length player, Youth & Young Manhood. The album explodes out of the blocks with the raucous ‘Red Morning Light’. Just feel that cowbell – all played by Nathan Followill, hirsute, denim and Tennessee style.

Kings Of Leon – The Bucket (2004)

On the back of the release of KOL’s Only By The Night (2008), I remember reading a critic who said that sometimes the public do get it right and popularity can overlap with quality. Their popularity was not quite realised in 2004, but I would argue with anyone who thinks that KOL got much better than the opening half of their second long player Aha Shake Heartbreak. And track number 6, ‘The Bucket’, is a blinder. A confident riff-laden wall of sound. Have a great week.
