Groove Armada – At The River (1999)

Londoners Andy Cato and Tom Findlay are Groove Armada. 20 years ago, they released the wonderful downtempo LP Vertigo. Prior to the chillout finale ‘Inside My Mind’, they featured ‘At The River’ with its sublime Patti Page sample at its core. The album was released on Jive’s Pepper Records.

Oversoul feat. Gram’ma Funk – Universal Unfolding (2000)

I’m making mellow this week. In 2000, Toi Sojer-Sacchi (aka Gram’ma Funk) pledged her allegience to the funk a year after making a name for herself as the vocalist on Groove Armada’s ‘I See You Baby’. This time, she was collaborating with Lennart Krarup and Italian DJs Arian Beheshti and Giuseppe Nuzzo. Together they were Oversoul and their track ‘Universal Unfolding’ made it waves on the Ibiza beaches. Have a great week.

Patti Page – Old Cape Cod (1957)

Patti Page

The Groove Armada feature this week called to mind their ubiquitous chillout track ‘At the River’. It was released in 1997 with its sample of Patti Page’s ‘Old Cape Cod’. This one’s a little right-field for me, but I thought I would post the original without synthesizer. There’s something soothing about Page’s voice, and frankly, I am very fond of sand dunes and salty air. Page passed away earlier this year; she certainly left her mark on Cape Cod.

Richie Havens

Folk singer and Woodstock hero, Richie Havens died on Monday. In 2004, he reached out to a new audience when he teamed up with London duo Andy Cato and Tom Findlay (Groove Armada) to deliver the soulful ‘Hands Of Time’. Fitting stuff. RIP Richie.
