Janelle Monáe – I Like That (2018)

I listened to a lot of Janelle Monáe on release of her 2010 album The ArchAndroid. I had been drawn in by the Outkast-inspired single ‘Tightrope’ that she produced with Big Boi. This year, I am pleased to see she’s back again with something bigger and more critically acclaimed. Dirty Computer features a roll call of diverse stars – Brian Wilson, Pharrell Williams, Grimes – reflecting Monáe’s appeal. ‘I Like It’ is a standout song from the album.

Danger Mouse feat. Run The Jewels & Big Boi – Chase Me (2017)

YouTubeAmazoniTunes – No Discogs

Some gritty hip hop for this Friday. Danger Mouse has collaborated with Run the Jewels and Big Boi for the release of ‘Chase Me’ from the upcoming movie Baby Driver. Danger Mouse’s masterstroke is the use of samples from the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s ‘Bellbottoms’.  Big Boi and Run The Jewels’ El-P and Killer Mike do their thing over a beat of drums, bass and guitar. Have a great weekend.

Anderson. Paak feat. ScHoolboy Q – Am I Wrong (2016)

No better way to end 2016 than to post a key cut off one of the best albums of the year. ‘Am I Wrong’ features on Anderson. Paak’s long player Malibu, and like much of the album it’s a collaboration. In this case, it’s the turn of ScHoolboy Q to break Paak’s smooth delivery on what can only be described as a deep funk groove that should make André 3000 and Big Boi blush. Have a fantastic New Year’s Eve!

UGK – Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You) (2007)

Underground Kingz (UGK) comprised Chad “Pimp C” Butler and Bernard “Bun B” Freeman. The former was found dead in a Hollywood hotel room in late 2007, but the year before the inevitable end of UGK, they recorded this delight with the help of some friends. Three 6 Mafia and Outkast feature throughout, making ‘Int’l Players Anthem’ an affirming super Southern rap. It was goin’ down.

Frank Ocean – Pink Matter (Remix) (2013)

YouTube – No Amazon – No iTunes

Frank Ocean

Not quite an Outkast reunion, this remix does however bring together the output of André 3000 and Big Boi for the first time in a while. ‘Pink Matter’ is off last year’s groundbreaking album Channel Orange from Frank Ocean. The original version already featured André 3000; for the remix earlier this year, Big Boi delivered a separate verse of his own. The pair were invited to input into the original track together, but declined. It may be a lengthy rest before we hear Outkast again; Ocean’s waves will help the wait.
