Wendy Rene – After Laughter (1964)

Wendy Rene

Wendy Rene was born Mary Frierson in Memphis, the home of Stax Records. Otis Redding came up with the name when she signed for the label as a teenager in 1963. Evidently, Wendy Rene was quickly connected as she was taken under the wing of Stax co-founder Jim Stewart and Booker T. Jones would play organ on her classic 1964 single “After Laughter”. The tune failed to draw audiences in its day, but with its island sound and organ-led harmony, today it feels fresh.
