Michael Kiwanuka – I’m Getting Ready (2011)

Michael Kiwanuka

That Stevie Winwood sound seems to be in favour again. Fashions fade, style is eternal. Perversely, one singer that would seem to be under the allure of ‘blue-eyed soul’ is Michael Kiwanuka. With a sound not too dissimilar to the colourful ‘Heartbeats’ of José Gonzales, Kiwanuka calls upon the influences of Winwood, Van Morrison and Paul Simon as well as the more obvious legacies of Otis Redding and Terry Callier. First released on its own extended player in 2011, ‘I’m Getting Ready’ later featured on the album Home Again. Original, it may not be. But its nostalgia is welcome to these ears.
