Desmond Dekker

Desmond Dekker (né Dacres), Toots Hibbert and Lee Perry may have invented reggae between them, but it was Dekker who defined the rude boy antics of post-Independence Jamaica. The rocksteady classic ‘007’ would be prove to be the real turning point in Dekker’s career and give him the confidence and profile to pen the success that was ‘Israelites’. With its infectious rhythm, ‘007’ became the first Jamaican-produced record to make it into the UK’s Top 20. Having just come out of the other side of Skyfall fever myself, I am sure that its modish title will have helped too.
