David Bowie – Five Years (1972)

YouTube – AmazoniTunes – Discogs

Certainly the first apocalyptic song for which I learnt the entire lyrics, ‘Five Years’ opens the stunning The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. 1) Five Years 2) Soul Love 3) Moonage Daydream 4) Starman … I think this must be the greatest opening salvo ever committed to vinyl. As such, the song not only represents itself and the glory of Mick Woodmansey’s tight drum pattern and Mick Ronson’s string arrangements, but also the epic drama that is to follow. ‘Five Years’ is without doubt a desert island disc, particularly if I’m counting down.
