By the time of their fifth studio album, There’s a Riot Goin’ On, the Family Stone were straining as a kinship. The circumstances would lead to some of the most avant-garde work from the funk pioneers. Sly Stone would have to employ much overdubbing alone in the studio, rather playing as an ensemble. For example, on ‘Family Affair’, he would use a drum machine in place of drummer Gregg Errico. The sound would have real influence on all those that considered themselves peers.
